If I had to figure out a better way to do it, I'd probably have the souls get you something for your own campaign to help synchronize it, similar to the rewards you got for rituals and the bonsues you got to help you manage defending them such as upkeep reduction.

I don't think RoC is a bad campaign in of its concept, and it did show some lessons from the Vortex (IE, you now have a delay and a warning before the surprise doomstacks, so you at least have a few turns to get ready for something to come out of the rifts and you can close them with heroes), but it was paced too aggressively and didn't mesh well with the intended concept, plus the way the rifts work in terms of things pouring out was not very well explained either. You also didn't lose your primary army for ten turns.īy contrast, RoC forced you on the defensive while the rest of the game still broadly encouraged the standard 'expand your empire', and hell you needed to do so in order to have the resources to make your super doomstack which is taken out of action for 10+ turns with each rift. Yes, you needed to be timely, but it was nothing you couldn't handle without maybe just reconsidering your expansion targets based on the location of ritual resource sites. Also, the Vortex gave you a bit more room to be at your own pace rather than strapping you to a rocket sled to dive into the Realms of Chaos.
